Yes we can!

On 20 January, Barack Obama became America's 44th President... and the nation's first black President.

Many Americans never imagined they would see a blck President. Only 50 years ago, Black leader Martin Luther King was fighting* for equal* rights* for blacks.

Until 1964, there was racial segregation in many southern* states* of the USA.

Barack Obama is of mixed race. His father was a black economist from Kenya. His mother was a white anthropologist from Hawaii.

They met at university and divorced when Barack was three years old.

Obama and his wife* Michelle have two girls: Maila, age ten, and Sasha, age 7.

Now they live in the White House, the Presidential residence in Washington.

There are many economic problems in the USA and the world today.
